Dr Shivani Sachdev Gour at Vogue Magazine Talks About Fertility-Boosting Diet for Planning a Baby

Planning a baby? Bookmark these foods that boost fertility and can help you conceive

When it comes to nutrition, this is what your body expects even before you're expecting.

While no particular food or ingredient can magically attract a baby to your womb, you cannot underestimate the role nutrition plays in conceiving. Certain foods and the right quantities of them can enhance your fertility and improve your chances of getting pregnant. We know we live in a world where tech advancements and modern medicine can help enormously, but the benefits of optimising your nutrition shouldn't be disregarded. You are what you eat is an adage that holds true in every aspect of your life, including your ability to conceive.

The link between your diet and fertility is not a new concept. Dr. Shivani Sachdev Gour, Gynaecologist, IVF expert and Director, SCI Healthcare, New Delhi, explains its origins. "A fertility-boosting diet can be traced to research from the Nurses' Health Study, which began in 1976 and grew to include over 238,000 female nurse participants aged 30 to 55. They found that a high intake of trans fats, low-fat dairy foods, animal protein, soft drinks, and a higher dietary glycemic load was associated with a higher risk of anovulatory infertility. Dr. Sneha Sathe, Fertility Consultant, Nova IVF Fertility Mumbai, agrees and says, "Eating healthy can only improve one's chances of successful conception. Preconception is the ideal time to adopt a healthy lifestyle where you eat right, work out, stop smoking and cut down on alcohol and caffeine. Food choices affect reproductive function in several ways. In addition to the direct impact of a nutritious diet on fertility, healthy food choices are critical to building up nutrient stores that are essential for the growth and development of the foetus during pregnancy."

Gratitude from our Happy Parent to SCI Team

We were new to this city. Through online website, we came to know about this clinic. We had a very good experience with Dr. Shivani Gour and Dr. Nupur Garg. During our first visit, they listened to us and understood our case. For the past three years, all doctors have ignored the main problem. So during our very first visit, we became convinced. They explanied the treatment plan, so we came out with positive feelings, We are grateful to Dr. Nupur for giving us good Solutions and counselling. She was always available to us on the phone whenever my wife was facing any problem during her pregnancy period. She suggested correct treatment and ultimate response. Even during pregnancy period, my wife was able to continue her job along with the treatment without much stress. All this happened due to mental support given by the SCI Noida team, which cannot be explained in words.

We are going to be parents next week (March 2022) . My family is thankful to the nursing staff, admin and other team members for giving us support. The behaviour of SCI team Noida was very good and supportive.

We highly recommend your clinic. I believe that in order to achieve a positive outcome from fertility treatment, everyone should maintain positive attitude and have faith in themselves. and their doctors.

Thanks to you all,
Vijaya Mandalika & Venkata Rao Mandalika

Does age impact your fertility?

Dr. Shivani Sachdev throws light upon some of the mistaken beliefs about fertility, and the relationship between age and fertility.

When people see celebrities like Farah Khan, Naomi Campbell, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Neha Dhupia, Gauri Khan deliver babies in their peri-40s, the general perception created is that age is not a factor in conception and pregnancy and the idea of having your first child before you hit the 30s is just a myth. Age, in fact, is the single most important factor impacting fertility levels.

With an increasing number of Indian women getting educated today and becoming a part of the workforce, getting married and planning for a baby often takes a backseat. An increased career orientation, late marriages, and a high rate of divorce and remarriage have pushed up the average age of having a baby.

Women must know that there is a biological clock and with advancing age, the ovarian reserves deplete. This means that both the number and quality of eggs reduce and the chances of having anomalies like Downs Syndrome considerably increase in the baby.

According to statistical models, the correct age for planning one child is no later than 32 years and for a two-children family is no later than 27 years. If the couple is willing to undergo an intervention like In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) to get pregnant, the age of the woman should be 35 years for those planning one child and 31 years for couples planning for two.
